Being multifunctional molecules of immune defense, they have not only a direct antimicrobial effect, but also are key components of congenital immunity. The article reviews vitamin D immunotropic action, in particular, its ability to induce the synthesis of defensins and cathelicidin. It provides data onthe relationship between low supply of vitamin D and the risk of infectious, autoimmune, allergic diseases.
